Organizing Tips for Crafters – Project Binder

Knoontime Knitting

Have you come across a project you made and wish you remember what yarn or needles you used?  Or, worse, given something away as a gift, only to realize you kept no record of what you made – but then you want to reproduce it?

There are fancy knitting journals that one can buy but I find them inadequate to my needs because the space is so small in which to make notes.  Instead, I prefer to use 3-ring binders with sheet protectors.

The 3-ring binders allow you to customize the size for the project.  I typically use letter-size binders because a) they’re less expensive than odd-size binders and b) they fit on my shelf in a uniform fashion.  I then use sheet protectors inside and instead of putting paper in the sheet protector, I put a sample of the project, such as the swatch, or a bit of leftover yarn if I didn’t have enough to keep the swatch (such as with an expensive luxury yarn).

I can also put notes on the project in the sheet protector with it.  I can type up the project and even put pictures.  I’ll admit, I haven’t gotten that far and right now it’s just my notes, sometimes even scribbled on the back of an envelope, but I can’t tell you how valuable this is a year or two later when I want to remember what exactly I made.  It also serves as a scrapbook so I can see where I am now in relation to before.

What do you use to organize your projects?

Journey into my supply closet

Knoontime Knitting

They say the first step is admitting you have an problem. So, I’m here to admit that I have an addiction to crafting supplies.

I’d like to follow that up with the usual disclaimer – But I can quit any time I want. Except I can’t. The only thing limiting my purchase of crafting supplies, is the room in my supply closet – and the closet is pretty well full up at this point.

Here’s a rundown of my stuff.
Top shelf: Candle holders, miniatures, scrapbook accessories, pieced quilts [unquilted].

2nd shelf: cross stitch floss, wrapping paper, ribbons, scrapbook paper, candle making machine.

3rd shelf: Beads, crayons, clay, temari supplies, canvasses, quilt fabric.

4th shelf: glue guns, more beads, paints, brushes, palettes, styrofoam, pins, sequins and embellishments, more canvasses, candle wax, threads and needles.

Bottom (not visible): portable easel, maps, greeting cards, paper and stickers.

Yarn and crochet/knitting supplies are in another closet downstairs.

I have a feeling you fellow crafters out there are saying – wow, that’s nothing – and I hope you are, because then I won’t feel so bad about buying more stuff. I’ll just have to rearrange the closet a little bit, that’s all.

What does your craft stash look like?

Organizing Tips for Crafters

Knoontime Knitting

Greetings from Vacation Land!  We went to see Brave, which is well worth it, and I finished the Bryce Canyon Shawl!  I’ll post pictures and a design update, but first just a quick note on organizing.

I came across a picture today that totally excited me.  One can use a desk organizer for knitting and sewing supplies!  The manufacturers probably think it’s for pens, pencils, and staplers, but we know better, don’t we?  Here’s an idea to get your juices flowing:

What a great idea, no?  How do you organize your tools?

Organizing Tips for Crafters – Cat Litter Containers

Knoontime Knitting

Do you have a cat? If you do, then you know how quickly the empty litter containers can accumulate. With a little forethought, those containers can be a huge boon to your crafting. First, find litter that comes in larger plastic containers with wide lids. I use the Petsmart generic brand and they have nice sturdy white pails with big square lids. Once the litter is gone, wash out the container. Let it dry completely. You can use it like a pail, standing up, and put supplies in it (I store yarn in mine), or you can build yourself an apothecary cabinet. Here’s how: Locate or build some shelving deep enough to hold the containers on their sides. Using a quarter-inch drill, drill a hole through the bottom of the container and screw it to the back of the shelving or directly into the wall. (This isn’t necessary, but it helps keep the containers in place and stable.) Then arrange your containers in whatever order you like, holding your craft materials clean and out of the way. Just watch out that “out of sight, out of mind” doesn’t mean that you buy MORE stash to supplement what is now hidden. Not that I, like, did that, or anything… ~innocent~
